SWALLOWING EVALUATION AND THERAPY

At North Shore Center for Speech, Language & Swallowing Disorders each client receives a comprehensive feeding and swallowing evaluation. We provide clinical assessments as well as modified barium swallow studies and/or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing studies in order to diagnose disorders and develop individualized treatment plans to improve swallowing functions. Our goal is to ensure that clients will be able to safely and effectively tolerate minimally restrictive diets. Therapy is provided 1-5 times per week for 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions depending on each client’s need. A one-way mirror is utilized in each treatment room to facilitate family participation.

The following treatment techniques are provided:
• Adaptive equipment such as cups, spoons, bottles, straws that can facilitate safe and effective eating and swallowing.
• Behavioral feeding
• Frazier water protocol
• Nutritional consultation
• Caregiver/parent/patient education and counseling
• Surface electro-myography (SEMG) used for biofeedback
• Sensory stimulation therapy
• Therapeutic muscular exercise to strengthen the muscles used for swallowing
• Training of compensatory feeding/swallowing postures/strategies
• Vital-stim - swallowing therapy
• Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES)
